The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:33 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Dean, Frum, Hartling, Neufeld, Ogilvie, Petitclerc, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (10).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Mireille LaForge, Procedural Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, the committee continued its study on the role of robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence in the healthcare system. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 14.)

WITNESSES:

SPARC (Partnership for Robotics in Europe):

Reinhard Lafrenz, Secretary General, euRobotics (by video conference).

Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI):

Subbarao Kambhampati, Professor, Arizona State University (by video conference).

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Kambhampati and Mr. Lafrenz each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:54 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:55 a.m., the committee resumed and proceeded with the consideration of a draft budget.

The committee considered a draft special study budget application relating to its study on the role of robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence in the healthcare system for fiscal year ending March 31, 2018.

It was agreed that the following special study budget application relating to its study on the role of robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence in the healthcare system, for fiscal year ending March 31, 2018, be approved, for submission to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration:

General Expenses  $ 7,000
Activity 1: Visit to Ottawa University and Ottawa Hospital  1,300
TOTAL $ 8,300

At 12:03 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
