Eight senators remember a veteran who has inspired them

On this Remembrance Day, senators reflect on veterans who have inspired them in their work.

The Senate Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs is a strong voice within Parliament in standing up for Canada’s veterans. It has released a number of reports on veterans’ issues, addressing how to better  implement the Veterans Charter, how the government can better support veterans in transition to civilian life, and how to improve policies that help veterans with occupational stress injuries.

Speaker George J. Furey remembers Private Tommy Ricketts, a hero of the First World War from Middle Arm, Newfoundland. Filmed in the Speaker’s dining room, in front of art inspired by the battle at Beaumont-Hamel, by Newfoundland artist Grant Boland.

Senator Diane Bellemare salutes Major general Terrence Liston, a Montreal-born hero who served in UN peacekeeping missions across the globe and remains a leader in Canada’s military community. Filmed at the Canadian War Museum’s LeBreton Gallery in Ottawa.

Senator Doug Black remembers his grandfather, Corporal Malcolm Mackenzie Black, who served in both the first and second world wars, and his father, Flight sergeant John Forrest Black, who served in the Second World War. Filmed at the Canadian War Museum’s LeBreton Gallery in Ottawa.

Senator Daniel Christmas remembers his father, Private Augustus Christmas, a hero from Membertou, Nova Scotia, who fought in the Second World War. Filmed in front of the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
