The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met this day at 6:05 p.m. in room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Michael Kirby, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Kelleher, P.C., Kenny, Kirby, Oliver, Perrault, P.C., Stewart and Tkachuk (7).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament, Mr. Gerald Goldstein, Director, Economics Division.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 24, 1997, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-93, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on February 18, 1997.
Mr. Dodge made an opening statement and along with Messrs Campbell and Jewett and Mmes Park and Cavett answered questions.
It was agreed, -- THAT Bill C-93 be adopted and reported to the Senate without amendment.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 24, 1997, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-37, An Act to implement an agreement between Canada and the Russian Federation, a convention between Canada and the Republic of South Africa, an agreement between Canada and the United Republic of Tanzania, an agreement between Canada and the Republic of India and a convention between Canada and Ukraine, for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.
Mr. Dodge made an opening statement and along with Messrs Déry and Campbell answered questions.
It was agreed, -- THAT Bill C-37 be adopted and reported to the Senate without amendment.
At 7:40 p.m. the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
