The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources met in camera at 9:30 a.m. this day, the Chairman, the Honourable Ronald D. Ghitter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Buchanan, Cochrane, Ghitter, Hays, Kenny, Marchand, Rompkey and Spivak.(9)

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Nolin.(1)

In attendance: Daniel Brassard from the Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From Ford Motor Company of Canada Ltd.:

Ron Bright, Director on Environmental Affairs.

From General Motors of Canada Ltd.:

Roger Thomas, Manager, Automative Regulatory Affairs in Product Engineering.

From Chrysler Canada Ltd.:

Stuart Perkins, Director of Engineering.

The Committee discussed its future business.

The Honourable Senator Kenny moved -- THAT the Committee concur in the following revised budget application for legislation purposes, and that the Chairman or his representative submit the said budget to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for approval:

Professional and Other Services:......................................................$ 17,100

Transportation and Communications:.................................................104,530

All other Expenditures:..........................................................................4,500

TOTAL.........................................................................................$ 126,130

The Honourable Senator Kenny moved - THAT the Committee concur in the following budget application for the Study on Energy, Environment and Natural Resources, and that the Chairman or his representative submit the said budget to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for approval:

Professional and Other Services:..........................................................$ 3,500

Transportation and Communications:.....................................................40,570

All other Expenditures:............................................................................1,000

TOTAL.............................................................................................$ 45,070

At 10:40 a.m., the Committee sits in public.

The Committee, in compliance with its Order of Reference dated Wednesday, March 27, 1996, proceeded to monitor all matters related to the implementation and application of the Act to accelerate the use of alternative fuels for motor vehicles (previously S-7). (See Proceedings of the Committee dated April 30, 1996)

Mr. Bright, Mr. Thomas and Mr. Perkins made statements and answered questions.

At 11:40 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
