The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day in Room 256-S, Centre Block at 9:30 a.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Sharon Carstairs, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Bryden, Carstairs, Doyle, Gigantès, Jessiman, Kinsella, Lewis, Losier-Cool, Milne and Pearson (11).
In attendance: Mary Hurley, Research Officer, Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

John Scratch, Senior General Counsel.
The Chair made an opening statement.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, May 15, 1996, the Committee commenced its consideration of Bill C-33, An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act.
Senator Jessiman made a statement.
Mr. Scratch made a statement and answered questions.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Kinsella -- THAT the Committee dispense with the clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-33.
The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Kinsella -- THAT Bill C-33 be reported to the Senate without amendment.
The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.
At 10:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
