The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met in camera, at 9:33 a.m., this day, in Room 160-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Christensen, Cochrane, Gill, Hubley, Johnson, Pearson, Rompkey, P.C., and Tkachuk (9).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley and Tonina Simeone.

The committee proceeded to the consideration of a draft budget.

The Honourable Senator Cochrane moved - That this Committee concur in the following budget application for the purpose of its consideration of aboriginal economic development in relation to Northern National Parks, and - That the Chair submit the said budget to the Standing Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration for approval:

Other Expenditures   $ 4,400
TOTAL   $ 67,249
 

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 9:40 a.m., the committee discussed future business.

At 10:30 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met in camera, at 9:35 a.m., this day, in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carney, P.C., Chalifoux, Christensen, Cochrane, Gill, Hubley, Rompkey, P.C. and Sibbeston (8).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Fraser (1).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley and Tonina Simeone.

The Honourable Senator Christensen moved - That, pursuant to Rule 94, Committee members disclose the existence, source, and nature, but not the value, of their private financial interests, whether held directly or indirectly, in respect of the Committee's order of reference relating to Aboriginal Economic Development in relation to Northern National Parks, which the Committee was authorised by the Senate to study on March 12, 2001; and

That members be required to file the disclosure of private financial interests with the Clerk of the Committee by May 25, 2001, after which date members who have not filed such a disclosure shall, in accordance with rule 94(7) be deemed to have declared that they have no private financial interests related to this order of reference; and

That, in accordance with rule 94(7), future members of the Committee be required to complete this declaration within 30 days of being added to the membership of theCommittee; and

That members be authorised, in accordance with rule 94(5), to file with the Clerk of the Committee from time to time an update to this disclosure.

That, the Clerk be authorised to provide copies of disclosures by facsimile or post to the public upon request.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 9:55 a.m., the committee discussed future business.

At 10:55 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 5:17 p.m, in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Christensen, Cochrane, Fraser, Gill, Pearson, Rompkey P.C., and Sibbeston (8).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Hubley and Wilson (2).

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 5, 2001, the Committee proceeded to study Bill S-24, An Act to implement an agreement between the Mohawks of Kanesatake and Her Majesty in right of Canada respecting governance of certain lands by the Mohawks of Kanesatake and to amend an Act in consequence.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Robert Nault, P.C., M.P., Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.

WITNESSES:

Deborah Corber, Senior Federal Negotiator, Self-Government Branch;

Walter Walling, Senior Negotiator, Specific Issues, Negotiation and Agreement Implementation.

The Honourable Robert Nault made an opening statement and then, along with other witnesses answered questions.

At 6:24 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
