(9) [English] The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 9:35 a.m., in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Chalifoux, presiding. Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fraser, Gill, Johnson, Pearson, Rompkey, P.C., and Tkachuk (7). Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Hubley and Wilson (2). In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 5, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill S-24, An Act to implement an agreement between the Mohawks of Kanesatake and Her Majesty in right of Canada respecting governance of certain lands by the Mohawks of Kanesatake and to amend an Act in consequence. (See Issue No. 1, Wednesday, April 25, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.) WITNESS: As an individual: Pierre Goyette. Mr. Goyette made a statement and answered questions. Mr. Goyette provided a brief. At 10:37 a.m., the committee proceeded in camera to consider its agenda. At 10:55 a.m., it was agreed - That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair. ATTEST:

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fraser, Gill, Hubley, Johnson, Pearson, and Tkachuk (7). Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Wilson (1). In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley. Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 5, 2001, the committee proceeded to study Bill S-24, An Act to implement an agreement between the Mohawks of Kanesatake and Her Majesty in right of Canada respecting governance of certain lands by the Mohawks of Kanesatake and to amend an Act in consequence. From the Municipality of Oka: Yvan Patry, Mayor; Marie Daoust, Municipal Secretary-Treasurer. From the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs: Deborah Corber, Senior Negotiator. From the Department of Justice: Sylvia Cox-Duquette, Legal Counsel. Ms Gabriel made a statement and answered questions. Mr. Patry made a statement and answered questions. The witnesses provided documents to the committee. The officials were invited to the table, made a statement, and answered questions. It was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-24. The Honourable Senator Gill moved that the bill carry. The question being put on the motion, it was adopted, on division. It was agreed that the Chair report the bill to the Senate without amendment. At 7:21 p.m., it was agreed - That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair. ATTEST:
