The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met at 9:20 a.m., this day, in room 160-S, Centre Block, the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Senator Johnson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Carney, P.C., Christensen, Gill, Hubley, Johnson, Léger and Sibbeston (7).

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley and Tonina Simeone.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, September 27, 2001, the committee proceeded to its examination of issues affecting urban Aboriginal youth, in particular, access, provision and delivery of services, policy and jurisdictional issues, employment and education, access to economic opportunities, youth participation and empowerment, and other related matters. (See Issue No. 6, Tuesday, October 23, 2001, for the full text of the Order of Reference.)

WITNESSES:

From Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami:

Jose Amaujaq Kusugak, President;

Franco Sheatiapik Buscemi, National Inuit Youth Council.

Mr. Buscemi made an opening statement and, along with Mr. Kusugak, answered questions.

At 10:57 a.m., the committee proceeded in camera to consider a draft agenda.

At 11:08 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
