The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met in camera this day at 9:04 a.m. in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Gill, Graham, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, LeBreton, Oliver, Stratton, Tkachuk, Tunney and Wiebe (11).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Frédéric Forge.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee began to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada.
The Chair welcomed the new senators to the committee.
The Honourable Senator Wiebe moved, -- That the committee approve the budget in the following amounts to study international trade, and the short-term and the long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada.

Transportation and Communications | $ 163,300.00 |
Other Expenditures | $ 4,800.00 |
TOTAL | $ 194,200.00 |
The question being put on the motion, -- it was agreed.
Discussion followed on the future business of the committee.
At 9:58 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Fairbairn, P.C., Gill, Gustafson, Hubley, LeBreton, Oliver, Stratton and Tunney (8).
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Fitzpatrick (1).
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering and Frédéric Forge.
Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Bob Friesen, President;
Jennifer Higginson, Trade Policy Analyst.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada.
Mr. Friesen made a statement and answered questions.
The Honourable Senator Stratton moved, -- That the committee permit transcripts to be taken of in camera meetings of the committee at the discretion of the Chair; and
That the transcripts created in such in camera meetings be made available only to the Members of the Committee, to the Clerk of the Committee and to the research officers assigned to the Committee by the Library of Parliament; and
That the Clerk of the Committee be instructed to dispose of copies of these transcripts at the end of the session.
The question being put on motion, -- it was agreed.
Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee began to examine the present and future state of forestry.
Discussion occurred relating to the order of reference on forestry.
Discussion followed on the future business of the committee.
At 10:50 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
