The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in camera, at 8:34 a.m. in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Leonard J. Gustafson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Biron, Chalifoux, Day, Gustafson, Hubley, Phalen, Tunney and Wiebe (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No.2.).

It was agreed - That Senator Wiebe and Senator Tunney present a summary of the findings from the Washington Fact-Finding Mission to the Minister for International Trade at the upcoming December 5 meeting.

It was agreed - That the Chair send a letter to the Speaker regarding the delays in receiving the translation of documents and,

That copies of the letter be sent to the Leader of the Government in the Senate and to the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate.

The Honourable Senator Wiebe moved - That the committee adopt the draft report and that the Chair and Deputy Chair be authorized to make minor spelling and stylistic changes, without affecting the substantive content; and - That the report be tabled in the Senate by the Chair at the earliest opportunity.

At 9:44 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 20, 2001 the committee continues to examine international trade in agricultural and agri-food products, and short-term and long-term measures for the health of the agricultural and the agri-food industry in all regions of Canada (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee, Issue No.2.).

Minister Vanclief made an opening statement and answered questions with Ron Doering.
