The Standing Committee on Banking, Trade and Commerce met at 3:45 p.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Kolber, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Angus, Di Nino, Furey, Gustafson, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Kelleher, P.C., Kolber, Kroft, Lynch-Staunton, Poulin, Setlakwe, Taylor, Tkachuk and Wiebe (14).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Lawson, St Germain, P.C., and Tunney (3).

In attendance: Mr. Stephen L. Harris, and from the Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament, Law and Government Division: Mr. Geoff Kieley, Research Officer.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, March 12, 2001, the committee began its examination of Bill S-17, An Act to amend the Patent Act.

The Honourable Brian Tobin made a statement and with the witnesses from Industry Canada answered questions.

Messrs Elston, Baumgartner and McCool made a statement and with the other witnesses from Canada's Research-Based Pharma ceutical Companies answered questions.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 1, 2001, the committee continued its examination of Bill S-16, An Act to amend the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) Act.

After debate,

It was agreed, - That clause-by-clause consideration of Bill S-16 proceed.

It was agreed - That the title be stood.

It was agreed - That clause 1 carry on division.

It was agreed - That clause 2 carry on division.

It was agreed - That clause 3 carry on division.

It was agreed - That clause 4 carry on division.

It was agreed, - That the Title carry on division.

It was agreed, - That Bill S-16 carry on division.

It was agreed, - That Bill S-16 be reported to the Senate without amendment.

At 6:10 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
