The Standing Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment, and Natural Resources met at 6:02 p.m. this day, in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Nicholas W. Taylor, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Adams, Banks, Buchanan, P.C., Christensen, Cochrane, Kenny, Sibbeston and Taylor (8).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Gauthier and Watt (2).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Research Officer and Mollie Dunsmuir.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on March 20, 2002, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-27, An Act respecting the long-term management of Nuclear fuel waste.

APPEARING:

The Honourable Herb Dhaliwal, P.C., M.P., Minister of Natural Resources.

WITNESSES:

Officials from Natural Resources Canada:

Peter Brown, Director, Uranium and Radioactive Waste Division;

Carmel Letourneau, Senior Policy Advisor, Uranium and Radioactive Waste Division;

Joanne Kellerman, Legal Counsel, Legal Services.

From Northwatch:

Brennain Lloyd, Coordinator.

The minister, the Officials from Natural Resources Canada and Northwatch made a presentation and answered questions.

The minister and Northwatch submitted a brief.

At 8:04 p.m., it was agreed — That the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on February 5, 2002, the committee proceeded to study Bill C-10, An Act respecting the national marine conservation areas of Canada.

Russ Jones, Consultant.

The witness from the British Columbia Aboriginal Fisheries Commission made a presentation and answered questions.

The British Columbia Aboriginal Fisheries Commission submitted a brief.

At 10:17 a.m., the committee proceeded in camera to discuss a draft agenda.
