The Standing Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules, and Orders met at 12:07 p.m. this day, in Room 356-S, Centre Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Jack Austin, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Austin, P.C., DeWare, Di Nino, Gauthier, Grafstein, Joyal, P.C., Kroft, Murray, P.C., Pitfield, P.C., Poulin and Stratton (12).

Other senators attending: The Honourable Senators Bacon, Beaudoin, Maheu, and Setlakwe (4).

In attendance: Paul Bélisle, Clerk of the Senate and Clerk of the Parliaments; Heather Lank, Principal Clerk, Committees and Private Legislation Directorate, The Senate; Mark Audcent, Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel, The Senate; and James Robertson, Research Officer, Parliamentary Research Branch, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee considered recommendations on a policy for disabled senators.

At 12:30 p.m., the committee proceeded to consider its Order of Reference of February 20, 2001 respecting the Standing Joint Committee on Official Languages.

The Honourable Senators Maheu, Bacon, Beaudoin, and Setlakwe made statements respecting the Joint Committee and answered questions.

It was agreed that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure consider possible witnesses on the subject of the Standing Joint Committee.

At 1:12 p.m., the committee proceeded in camera.

At 1:30 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the Chair.
