The Standing Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules and Orders met in camera at 12:10 p.m. this day, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Austin, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Austin, P.C., DeWare, Gauthier, Kinsella, Kroft, LeBreton, Losier-Cool, Poulin and Stratton (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Finestone, P.C., Kenny, Prud'homme, P.C. and Stollery (4).

The committee proceeded to its consideration of Bill S-34, An Act respecting royal assent to bills passed by both Houses of Parliament, as referred to it by the Senate on October 4, 2001.

The Honourable Senator Carstairs, P.C., Leader of the Government in the Senate, made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed that the briefing book "Bill S-34, Royal Assent" circulated at today's meeting, be printed as an appendix to this day's proceedings.

It was agreed that Mr. John Aimers, Chairman of the Monarchist League of Canada, be invited to appear as a witness at a future meeting.

At 12:55 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
