OTTAWA, Wednesday March 28, 2001

The Committee of Selection of the Senate met this day at 12:30 p.m. to appoint senators to serve on several select committees during the current session, in accordance with Rule 85(1)(b) of the Rules of the Senate.

Senator Léonce Mercier (Chairman) presiding.

[Translation]

The Chairman: Honourable Senators, we will now proceed to appoint senators to serve on certain committees. Are there any nominations for the Senate Committee on Defence and Security?

 [English]

Senator Poulin: I move that the Honourable Senators Cordy, Hubley, Kenny, Pépin, Rompkey and Wiebe be nominated to sit on the Standing Senate Committee on Defence and Security.

Senator DeWare: I move that Senator Atkins, Senator Forrestall and Senator Meighen be appointed to sit on the Standing Senate Committee on Defence and Security.

[Translation]

The Chairman: Agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Motion agreed to.

The next item of business is the appointment of senators to serve on the Senate Committee on Human Rights. Are there any nominations?

Senator Poulin: I nominate senators Ferretti Barth, Finestone, Poy, Watt and Wilson to serve on the Committee on Human Rights.

 [English]

Senator DeWare: I move the nomination of Senators Andreychuk, Beaudoin, Kinsella and Oliver to sit on the Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights.

[Translation]

The Chairman: Agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Motion agreed to. Are there any other nominations?

Senator Poulin: The Liberals have decided to give up a spot to permit an independent colleague to fully participate in the work of the Senate. Therefore, I move that Senator Pitfield be nominated to sit on the Standing Committee on Privileges, Standing Rules and Orders. Senator Hervieux-Payette has resigned.

 [Translation]

The Chairman: Agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: Motion agreed to. Are there any other nominations?

Senator Poulin: I move that the name of Senator St. Germain be substituted for that of Senator Wilson on the Aboriginal Peoples Committee.

The Chairman: Agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: The next order of business is that either the Chairman or a senator report to the Senate the nominations confirmed at today's meeting.

Senator Corbin: I so move.

The Chairman: Agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

The Chairman: I move that the Committee of Selection adjourn on motion of the Chair. Agreed?

Hon. Senators: Agreed.

 The meeting is adjourned.
