The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day in room 705, Victoria Building, at 6:18 p.m., the Deputy Chair, the Honourable Senator Jack Wiebe, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Chalifoux, Fairbairn, P.C., Gustafson, Hubley, LaPierre, Ringuette, Tkachuk and Wiebe (8).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 31, 2002, the committee continued to consider the impact of climate change on Canada's agriculture, forests and rural communities and the potential adaptation options focusing on primary production, practices, technologies, ecosystems and other related areas. (For a complete text of Order of Reference see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1).

WITNESSES:

From Natural Resources Canada:

Gordon Miller, Director General, Science Branch, Canadian Forest Service;

Donald Lemmen, Acting Executive Director, Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Directorate, Earth Sciences Sector.

From Environment Canada:

Henry Hengeveld, Chief Science Advisor, Climate Change.

The Deputy Chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Miller made an opening statement

Mr. Lemmen and Mr. Miller made a presentation.

Mr. Lemmen and Mr. Miller answered questions.

At 6:24 p.m., the sitting was adjourned.

At 6:30 p.m., the sitting was resumed.

Mr. Hengeveld made a presentation and answered questions.

At 8:23 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
