The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 4:07 p.m., in room 257, East Block, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Losier-Cool, presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beaudoin, Chaput, Comeau, Gauthier, Keon, Léger, Losier-Cool and Maheu (8).
In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Research Analyst, Library of Parliament.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study of the operation of the Official Languages Act and of regulations and directives made thereunder (See Committee Proceedings of February 10, 2003, Issue No. 3).

Eileen Sarkar, Assistant Deputy Minister, Citizenship and Heritage;
Susan Peterson, Assistant Deputy Minister, Cultural Affairs.
The Honourable Sheila Copps made a presentation and, together with Messrs. Bouchard and Lemoine and Ms. Sarkar, answered questions.
The meeting was suspended at 5:34 p.m. and, pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), resumed in camera at 5:53 p.m. for the purpose of considering a draft report.
The committee concluded consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study of the report entitled ``Environmental Scan: Access to Justice in Both Official Languages.'' (See Committee Proceedings of April 7, 2003, Issue No. 5.)
It was agreed, — That research and other staff could remain in the room during the in camera discussion.
The committee considered a draft report. After debate, it was agreed — That Recommendation No. 8 be deleted from the draft report.
It was moved by the Honourable Senator Gauthier — That the draft report, as amended, be adopted by the committee and submitted to the Senate on Wednesday, May 28, 2003. The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.
The meeting was suspended at 6:20 p.m. and resumed in public at 6:27 p.m.
The committee resumed consideration of its Order of Reference pertaining to its study of the operation of the Official Languages Act and of regulations and directives made thereunder. (See Committee Proceedings of February 10, 2003, Issue No. 3.)
