The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, in camera, at 9:34 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Campbell, Demers, Dyck, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Munson, Patterson, Raine, St. Germain, P.C., and Sibbeston (11).

In attendance: Shauna Troniak, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that senator's staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.

It was agreed that the draft report be adopted in principle.

It was agreed that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be empowered to approve the final text of the report with any grammatical, editing, formatting, and other such minor changes to wording and emphasis that are required.

At 9:55 a.m., pursuant to rule 92(2)(e), the committee considered a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that the committee ask senators' staff to leave the room prior to further discussion.

At 10:50 a.m., the committee suspended and senators' staff left the meeting room.

At 10:55 a.m., the committee resumed.

At 11:00 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
