The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met in camera this day, at 9:32 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Gerry St. Germain, P.C., presiding.
Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Dyck, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Munson, Patterson, Raine, Sibbeston and St. Germain, P.C. (9).
In attendance: Shauna Troniak and James Gauthier, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.
Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.
It was agreed that senator's staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.
It was agreed that the report be adopted in principle, subject to clarification on recommendations 3 and 5, with further consideration of requested changes to take place at the next meeting of the committee.
It was agreed that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be authorized to choose the title of the report on the British Columbia Treaty process.
At 11:10 a.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
