The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day, at 6:50 p.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Lovelace Nicholas, Meredith, Patterson, Raine, Sibbeston, Watt and White (8).

In attendance: Tonina Simeone, Shauna Troniak and James Gauthier, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The clerk informed the committee of the unavoidable absences of the chair and deputy chair and presided over the election of an acting chair.

The Honourable Senator Ataullahjan moved:

That the Honourable Senator Patterson be the acting chair.

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

The acting chair took the chair.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the committee continued its consideration on the evolving legal and political recognition of the collective identity and rights of the Métis in Canada. Patsy L. McArthur, Secretary-Treasurer.

Ms. McArthur made a statement and answered questions.

At 7:58 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 8:05 p.m., the committee resumed in camera.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 16, 2011, the committee continued its consideration of the federal government's constitutional, treaty, political and legal responsibilities to First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples and other matters generally relating to the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada. Pursuant to rule 92(2)(f), the committee considered a draft report.

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to remain in the room during the in camera portion of the meeting.

At 8:54 p.m., it was agreed that the committee adjourn to the call of the chair.
