The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 5:10 p.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Fabian Manning, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cochrane, Frum, Hervieux-Payette, P.C., Hubley, MacDonald, Manning, Oliver, Patterson and Raine (9).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Baker, P.C., and Harb (2).

In attendance: Claude Emery, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; and Ceri Au, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, October 20, 2011, the committee began to examine and report on the management of the grey seal population off Canada's East Coast.

WITNESSES:

Fisheries and Oceans Canada:

David Balfour, Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Ecosystems and Fisheries Management;

Siddika Mithani, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ecosystems and Oceans Science Sector;

Patrice Simon, Director, Environment and Biodiversity Science.

Mr. Balfour and Ms. Mithani made a statement and, together with Mr. Simon, answered questions.

At 6:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
