The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day, at 6:47 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Dawson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boisvenu, Dawson, Doyle, Eggleton, P.C., Greene, Housakos, MacDonald, Mercer, Unger and Verner, P.C. (10).

In attendance: Terrence Thomas, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Mona Ishack, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, the committee received senior management and officials of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to explain their decision to cut funding to Radio Canada International services by 80 per cent.

WITNESSES:

CBC/Radio-Canada:

Hubert T. Lacroix, President and CEO;

Hélène Parent, Director of Radio Canada International.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Lacroix made a statement and, with Ms. Parent, answered questions.

At 7:35 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to discuss a draft report.

It was agreed that the chair table a report to the chamber on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — Radio Canada International.

At 7:36 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
