The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met this day, at 10:30 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the deputy chair, the Honourable Percy E. Downe, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Demers, Downe, Fortin-Duplessis, Johnson, Mockler, Moore, Oh, Robichaud, P.C., Smith, P.C.(Cobourg) and Verner, P.C. (11).

In attendance: Natalie Mychajlyszyn and Brian Hermon, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 21, 2013, the committee continued its study on security conditions and economic developments in the Asia-Pacific region, the implications for Canadian policy and interests in the region, and other related matters. (For the complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

As individuals:

Toh See Kiat, Chairman and Director, Goodwins;

Ken Sunquist, Former Assistant Deputy Minister, Asia and Africa and Chief Trade Commissioner, DFAIT and Former Canadian Ambassador to Indonesia.

The chair made an opening statement.

Messrs. Sunquist and Toh each made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:48 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
