The Standing Senate Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met this day at 7:03 p.m. in the Benson room of the Coast Bastion Hotel, Nanaimo, British Columbia, the chair, the Honourable Fabian Manning, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Hubley, Lovelace Nicholas, Manning, McInnis, Raine and Stewart Olsen (6).

In attendance: Odette Madore, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament, and Brigitte Lemay, Communications Officer, Communications Directorate of the Senate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, December 9, 2013, the committee continued its study on the regulation of aquaculture, current challenges and future prospects for the industry in Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

WITNESSES:

Richard Harry, President.

Sable Fish Canada Ltd. (Kyuquot Sound):

Linda Hiemstra, Projects Manager.

Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs:

Bob Chamberlin, Vice-President and Chief, Kwicksutaineuk Ah-kwa-mish First Nation.

First Nations Fisheries Council of British Columbia:

Jordan Point, Executive Director.

Ms. Hiemstra, Chief Harry, Mr. Point and Chief Chamberlin made statements and answered questions.

At 8:52 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
