The Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence met this day at 1:03 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Daniel Lang, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Beyak, Dagenais, Kenny, Lang, Mitchell, Ngo, Stewart Olsen and White (8).

In attendance: Holly Porteous, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, June 19, 2014, the committee continued its study on security threats facing Canada. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 9.)

WITNESSES:

Service de police de la Ville de Montréal:

Marc Parent, Director;

Bernard Lamothe, Assistant Director, Special Investigations;

François Bleau, Inspector, Intelligence Services Division.

Edmonton Police Service:

Rod Knecht, Chief (by video conference).

Peel Regional Police:

Brian Adams, Deputy Chief.

As an individual:

Michelle Walrond, mother of a radicalized man.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Parent made a statement and, together with Mr. Lamothe and Mr. Bleau, answered questions.

At 2:04 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 2:08 p.m., the committee resumed.

Chief Knecht made a statement and answered questions.

At 3:06 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 3:31 p.m., the committee resumed.

Deputy Chief Adams made a statement and answered questions.

At 4:08 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 4:24 p.m., the committee resumed.

It was agreed that Ms. Walrond's prepared statement, available in English only, be distributed now and that the French version follow once it has been translated.

Ms. Walrond made a statement and answered questions.

At 5:36 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:40 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera for the consideration of a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that senators' staff be permitted to stay in the room.

At 5:51 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
