The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9:30 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Dennis Dawson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Dawson, Demers, Eggleton, P.C., Housakos, MacDonald, Mercer and Plett (7).

In attendance: Terrence Thomas and Dillan Theckedath, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Monday, December 9, 2013, the committee began its study to hear from representatives from BCE Inc. (Bell Canada) and the Privacy Commissioner of Canada regarding the practice of collecting and analyzing data from Bell Canada customers for commercial purposes including targeted advertising.

WITNESSES:

Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada:

Chantal Bernier, Interim Privacy Commissioner of Canada;

Regan Morris, Legal Counsel, Legal Services, Policy and Research Branch.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mme Bernier made a statement and, together with M. Morris, answered questions.

At 10:20 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
