The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 5:07 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Diane F. Griffin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Dagenais, Doyle, Gagné, Griffin, Mercer, Oh, Petitclerc and Woo (8).

In attendance: Aïcha Coulibaly, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, March 9, 2017, the committee continued its study on the potential impact of the effects of climate change on the agriculture, agri-food and forestry sectors. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 26.)

WITNESSES:

As an individual:

Ralph Martin, Professor, Ontario Agricultural College, University of Guelph (by video conference).

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada:

Shabtai Bittman, Research Scientist, Environmental Health, Agassiz Research and Development Centre, Science and Technology Branch (by video conference);

Karen Beauchemin, Research Scientist, Sustainable Production Systems, Lethbridge Research and Development Centre, Science and Technology Branch (by video conference).

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Martin made a statement and answered questions.

It was agreed, that the committee proceed in camera and that, notwithstanding the usual practice, senators' assistants be allowed to remain in the room.

At 5:46 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:48 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

At 5:58 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:10 p.m., the committee resumed in public.

Mr. Martin, Ms. Beauchemin and Mr. Bittman made statements and answered questions.

At 6:54 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
