The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met this day at 8:03 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Diane F. Griffin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Ataullahjan, Bernard, Black (Alberta), Black (Ontario), Doyle, Griffin, Martin, Mercer, Miville-Dechêne and Oh (10).

In attendance: Corentin Bialais and Offah Obale, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, February 15, 2018, the committee continued its study on how the value-added food sector can be more competitive in global markets. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 47).

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Przednowek, Mr. Taylor and Ms. Iwashita made statements and answered questions.

The Honorable Senator Black (Ontario) moved:

That, pursuant to the order adopted by the Senate on March 1, 2018, authorizing the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry to examine and report on such issues as may arise from time to time relating to agriculture and forestry, the Committee undertake a study related to "Support and Compensation for Supply Managed Agricultural Sectors in relation to the USMCA, CPTPP and CETA Trade Agreements", as soon as practicable; and

That Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure be instructed to develop a work plan accordingly and that the committee submit its report for this study to the Senate no later than December 6, 2018.

After debate, the motion was adopted.

At 9:07 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 9:13 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Brewin and Mr. Larue made statements and answered questions.

At 10:07 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
