The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples met this day at 9 a.m., in room 160-S, Centre Block, the chair, the Honourable Lillian Eva Dyck, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boniface, Christmas, Doyle, Dyck, Manning, McPhedran, Mégie, Patterson, Raine, Sinclair, Tannas and Watt (12).

In attendance: Sara Fryer, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Geneviève Guidon, Senate Communications.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, December 15, 2016, the committee continued its study on the new relationship between Canada and First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 16.)

WITNESSES:

As individuals:

Viola Robinson, Former Commissioner, The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples;

Tagak Curley.

The chair paid tribute to the late Honourable Thelma Chalifoux, former Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples. The committee observed a minute of silence in memory of the Honourable Thelma Chalifoux.

Ms. Robinson made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:03 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:10 a.m., the committee resumed.

The chair welcomed the students from Nunavut Sivuniksavut College.

Mr. Curley made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:04 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
