The Standing Senate Committee on National Finance met this day at 9:35 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Larry W. Smith, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Cools, Forest, Marshall, Mockler, Moncion, Neufeld, Smith and Stewart Olsen (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Pratte (1).

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, April 12, 2016, the committee began its study of the financial implications and regional considerations of Canada's aging population.

WITNESSES:

The Conference Board of Canada:

Louis Thériault, Vice-President, Public Policy.

As individuals:

Dr. Dennis Furlong, former Minister of Health, New Brunswick;

Richard Saillant, Economist and Author.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Thériault, Dr. Furlong and Mr. Saillant each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 11:31 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
