The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 5:04 p.m., in room 257, the East Block, the chair, the Honourable René Cormier, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, Jaffer, Maltais, McIntyre, Mégie, Moncion, Poirier and Smith (9).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Angus Wilson, Legislative Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the committee continued its examination and report on Canadians' views about modernizing the Official Languages Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 12.)

WITNESSES:

Stéphanie Chouinard, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, Royal Military College of Canada.

Martin Normand, Postdoctoral Fellow, Chaire de recherche sur la francophonie et les politiques publiques, University of Ottawa.

The Honourable Serge Joyal, P.C., Senator.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Chouinard and Mr. Normand each made statements and answered questions.

At 6:06 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:11 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

At 6:39 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:40 p.m., the committee resumed in public.

The chair made a statement.

The Honourable Senator Joyal made a statement and answered questions.

At 8 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
