The Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages met this day at 4 p.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable René Cormier, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Gagné, Jaffer, Maltais, McIntyre, Mégie, Moncion, Poirier and Smith (9).

In attendance: Marie-Ève Hudon, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Service, Library of Parliament; Marc-André Roy, Parliamentary Counsel, Office of the Law Clerk and Parliamentary Counsel; and Kalina Waltos, Legislative Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the committee continued its study to examine and report on Canadians' views about modernizing the Official Languages Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 2.)

Nancy Chahwan, Chief Human Resources Officer.

Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada:

Guylaine F. Roy, Deputy Minister, Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie.

Janine Sherman, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Senior Personnel and Public Service Renewal.

Ms. Giguère and Mr. Homan made statements and, together with Ms. Saikaley, answered questions.

At 4:58 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:06 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Borbey, Ms. Roy, Ms. Sherman and Ms. Chahwan made statements and answered questions.

At 6:04 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 6:09 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to consider a draft agenda (future business).

At 6:32 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
