The Standing Senate Committee on Human Rights met this day at 11:33 a.m., in room 9, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Jim Munson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Ataullahjan, Bernard, Eaton, Hartling, Martin, McPhedran, Munson, Ngo, Omidvar and Pate (11).

In attendance: Erin Shaw and Jean-Philippe Duguay, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, the committee continued its study on the issues relating to human rights and, inter alia, to review the machinery of government dealing with Canada's international and national human rights obligations. (For complete text of order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 16.)

Anwar Arkani, President.

Justice for All — Burmese Task Force:

Ahmed Ramadan, Outreach Coordinator.

High Commission for the People's Republic of Bangladesh:

His Excellency Mizanur Rahman, High Commissioner;

Nayem Uddin Ahmed, Minister.

Amnesty International Canada:

Alex Neve, Secretary General.

Human Rights Watch:

Farida Deif, Canada Director.

Inter Pares:

Kevin Malseed, Program Manager, Burma.

The chair made an opening statement.

Mr. Arkani and Mr. Ramadan each made a statement and answered questions.

At 12:24 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:25 p.m., the committee resumed.

His Excellency Mr. Rahman made a statement and, together with Mr. Ahmed, answered questions.

At 1:10 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 1:14 p.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Neve, Ms. Deif and Mr. Malseed each made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:58 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
