The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:24 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Eggleton, P.C., McIntyre, Merchant, Nancy Ruth, Neufeld, Ogilvie, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (9).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Munson (1).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, the committee continued its study on mandate letters of various ministers. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 11).

APPEARING:

The Honourable Jane Philpott, P.C., M.P., Minister of Health.

WITNESSES:

Health Canada:

Simon Kennedy, Deputy Minister.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research:

Dr. Alain Beaudet, President.

Public Health Agency of Canada:

Dr. Gregory Taylor, Chief Public Health Officer;

Kimberly Elmslie, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Branch.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency:

Paul Glover, President.

The chair made a statement.

Minister Philpott made a statement and, together with Mr. Kennedy and Dr. Taylor, answered questions.

At 5:20 p.m., the Minister was excused and Ms. Elmslie was invited to the table. The witnesses continued to answer questions.

At 6:14 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
