The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 4:16 p.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Kelvin Kenneth Ogilvie, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cormier, Dean, Eggleton, P.C., MacDonald, Mégie, Merchant, Ogilvie, Petitclerc, Raine, Seidman and Stewart Olsen (11).

In attendance: Sonya Norris, Analyst, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament; Mireille LaForge, Procedural Clerk, Senate Committees Directorate.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, October25, 2016, the committee continued its study on the role of robotics, 3D printing and artificial intelligence in the healthcare system. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 14.)

WITNESSES:

As individuals:

Dr. Garnette Sutherland, Professor of Neurosurgery, University of Calgary;

Goldie Nejat, Director of the Institute for Robotics and Mechatronics, Canada Research Chair in Robots for Society.

The chair made a statement.

Ms. Nejat and Dr. Sutherland each made a statement and answered questions.

At 6:03 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
