The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met this day at 10:30 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the chair, the Honourable Art Eggleton, P.C., presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bernard, Cordy, Doyle, Eggleton, P.C., Galvez, Manning, Mégie, Munson, Omidvar, Petitclerc, Poirier, Raine and Seidman (13).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Frum and Griffin (2).

In attendance: Ferda Simpson, Procedural Clerk, Committees Directorate; Sonya Norris and Elizabeth Cahill, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 9, 2017, the committee continued examination of Bill C-36, An Act to amend the Statistics Act. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 32.)

WITNESSES:

UK Statistics Authority:

John Pullinger, UK National Statistician and Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority (by video conference).

Statistics Canada:

Andrée Desaulniers, Senior Analyst, Information Management Division.

The chair made a statement.

Mr. Pullinger made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:18 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 11:22 a.m., the committee resumed.

It was agreed that the committee proceed to clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-36, An Act to amend the Statistics Act.

Ms. Desaulniers was invited to the table to answer questions from time to time.

It was agreed that clause 1 carry.

It was agreed that clause 2 carry.

It was agreed that clause 3 carry.

It was agreed that clause 4 carry.

It was agreed that clause 5 carry.

It was agreed that clause 6 carry.

It was agreed that clause 7 carry.

The committee considered draft observations.

After debate, it was agreed that the draft observations be appended to the report.

It was agreed that the Subcommittee on Agenda and Procedure approve the final version of the observations being appended to the report, taking into account the changes discussed today.

It was agreed that the chair report the bill, with observations, to the Senate.

At 11:46 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
