The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9:30 a.m., in room 2, Victoria Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Michael L. MacDonald, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Boisvenu, Bovey, Eggleton, P.C., Galvez, Griffin, MacDonald and Saint-Germain (7).

In attendance: Jed Chong and Nicole Sweeney, Analysts, Parliamentary Information and Research Services, Library of Parliament.

Also present: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, the committee continued its examination of the regulatory and technical issues related to the deployment of connected and automated vehicles. (For complete text of the order of reference, see proceedings of the committee, Issue No. 1.)

WITNESSES:

Michigan Department of Transportation:

Kirk Steudle, Director (by video conference).

United States Department of Transportation:

Finch Fulton, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy (by video conference);

Nathaniel Beuse, Associate Administrator for Vehicle Safety Research, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (by video conference).

The deputy chair made a statement.

Mr. Steudle made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:17 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:25 a.m., the committee resumed.

Mr. Fulton made a statement and, together with Mr. Beuse, answered questions.

At 10:56 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
