The Standing Senate Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy met this day at 4 p.m., in room W110, 1 Wellington St., the chair, the Honourable Pamela Wallin, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bellemare, Deacon (Nova Scotia), Gignac, Loffreda, Marwah, Ringuette, Smith, Wallin, Wells and Yussuff (10).

Participating in the meeting: Edison Roy-César, Mehrab Kiarsi and Adriane Yong, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, the committee continued its consideration of Bill C-228, An Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act and the Pension Benefits Standards Act, 1985.

Bea Bruske, President (by videoconference);

Chris Roberts, National Director, Social and Economic Policy.

United Steelworkers Union:

Marty Warren, National Director (by videoconference);

Meg Gingrich, Assistant to the National Director (by videoconference).

Unifor:

Les MacDonald, Chair of the Retired Workers Council Executive;

Sandeep Kakan, Director, Pensions and Benefits department (by videoconference).

Congress of Union Retirees of Canada:

Michael MacIsaac, President.

Bea Bruske and Marty Warren each made a statement and, together with Chris Roberts, answered questions.

At 5 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:02 p.m., the committee resumed.

Michael MacIsaac and Les MacDonald each made a statement and, together with Sandeep Kakan, answered questions.

At 5:46 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 5:47 p.m., pursuant to rule 12-16(1)(d), the committee resumed in camera to discuss a draft agenda (future business).

It was agreed that each committee member be allowed to have one staff member present during the in camera portion of the meeting.

At 5:57 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
