The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs met this day at 11:54 a.m., in room B30, Senate of Canada Building, the deputy chair, the Honourable Denise Batters, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Batters, Boyer, Carignan, P.C., Clement, Cotter, Dalphond, Klyne, Prosper, Simons and Tannas (10).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senator McBean (1).

Participating in the meeting: Michaela Keenan-Pelletier and Iryna Zazulya, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 20, 2023, the committee continued its consideration of Bill S-250, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (sterilization procedures).

WITNESSES:

Canadian Medical Association:

Dr. Kathleen Ross, President;

Dr. Paula Cashin, Board Vice-Chair.

Native Women's Association of Canada:

Sarah Niman, Senior Director, Legal Services.

Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund:

Pam Hrick, Executive Director and General Counsel.

Kathleen Ross made a statement and, together with Paula Cashin, answered questions.

At 12:44 p.m., the committee suspended.

At 12:52 p.m., the committee resumed.

Sarah Niman and Pam Hrick each made a statement and answered questions.

At 1:34 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
