The Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications met this day at 9 a.m., in room B45, Senate of Canada Building, the chair, the Honourable Leo Housakos, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Cardozo, Clement, Cuzner, Dasko, Deacon (Ontario), Housakos, Miville-Dechêne, Quinn and Simons (9).

Participating in the meeting: Jed Chong and Khamla Heminthavong, analysts, Library of Parliament.

Pursuant to the order of reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the committee continued its consideration of Bill S‑269, An Act respecting a national framework on advertising for sports betting.

WITNESSES:

Canadian Gaming Association:

Paul Burns, President and Chief Executive Officer.

Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission:

Scott Hutton, Vice-President, Consumer, Analytics and Strategy;

Nanao Kachi, Director, Social and Consumer Policy;

Rachelle Frenette, General Counsel and Deputy Executive Director.

Kahlil Philander, Assistant Professor, School of Hospitality Business Management, Washington State University (by videoconference).

Paul Burns, Catherine MacLeod and Kahlil Philander each made a statement and answered questions.

At 10:12 a.m., the committee suspended.

At 10:18 a.m., the committee resumed.

Scott Hutton made a statement and, together with Nanao Kachi and Rachelle Frenette, answered questions.

At 10:44 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
