Federal government must do more to ensure Canada achieves net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
Ottawa – The federal government must strengthen emissions reduction measures given that Canada will not meet its legislated 2030 greenhouse gas emissions target, the Senate Committee on Energy, the Environment and Natural Resources said in a recent letter to Environment, Climate Change and Nature Minister Julie Dabrusin.
The committee studied the 2025 Progress Report on the 2030 Emissions Reduction Plan on March 12 and March 26, 2026. Although Canada has made progress in reducing emissions, projections show that Canada is not on track to meet its 2030 target.
Under the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, Canada is required to set national targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in support of achieving net-zero emissions in Canada by 2050. While achieving emissions reductions is crucial to the environment’s well-being, it can also support economic competitiveness and investment, particularly where clear policy direction enables businesses to plan for the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Failure to meet interim goals will make it more difficult to achieve the net-zero objective. The committee urges the government to strengthen current and planned measures to further address the gap.
