Welcome speech

Citizenship ceremony in Montreal for 310 new Canadians

January 10, 2019

The Honorable Senator Pierre J. Dalphond:

Good morning and welcome on this ancestral land of the St. Lawrence Iroquoians, which comprised an important village, Osheaga, translated by the French explorers in Hochelaga.

Congratulations to each of you on becoming Canadians. You have worked hard to arrive to this point of your journey. Most people do not choose their citizenship, they are born into it.But for , you, the Canadian citizenship is choice resulting from important efforts and sacrifices. I am delighted that you are here today.

For those of you who have escaped war, tyranny or oppression because of your political opinion, religion, colour, gender, sexual orientation or culture, you are welcome in this land that has welcomed migrants for centuries. Do not be afraid to express your opinions and live as equals in accordance with your wishes and convictions, even if they are not popular among those who have come here before you. As all other Canadian, you enjoy the rights and freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution and Charters of Rights and Freedoms.

As said by judge Rania Sfeir, we are a country which values equality and the protection of fundamental rights.

Finally, I am delighted that you have chosen to establish yourself in Quebec, a vibrant and unique French-speaking society in America. You come from all over the world, each with your own array of knowledge, culture and experiences. These will catalyze new ideas that will shape the history and the heritage of this province and our country.

I strongly believe that diversity ensures the vitality of our society and culture.

Another new chapter is in front of you. The best is yet to come.

Welcome to your new home.
