This week, members of the Senate Committee on Human Rights asked the government to allow North Korean defectors to settle in Canada. Committee members held a press conference on Monday, June 20, 2016, to release their report The Forgotten Many: Human Rights and North Korean Defectors.

Indigenous youth leaders celebrate National Aboriginal Day with the Senate

Senators from the Committee on Aboriginal Peoples invited 12 Indigenous youth leaders from coast to coast to coast to celebrate National Aboriginal Day on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.

The committee usually seeks solutions to problems plaguing Aboriginal communities across Canada — from land treaties, to housing shortages, to economic marginalization – but on this occasion success stories were the committee’s focus.

“The Indigenous youth leaders that the Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples heard this morning are partners in building solutions and strong Indigenous communities,” said SenatorLillian Eva Dyck, committee chair. “We must listen to them. They are the future.”

“At a time when youth suicides are sadly dominating news today, it’s important to recognize that young Aboriginal leaders across Canada have done great things that inspire their peers,” said Senator Dennis Patterson, deputy chair of the committee.

Senators concerned by some costly measures included in the budget bill

Bill C-15, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget tabled in Parliament on March 22, 2016 and other measures, passed third reading in the Senate on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, paving the way for it to receive Royal Assent and become law.

Members of the Senate Committee on National Finance expressed concern over aspects of the bill, which they detailed in a report tabled on Monday, June 20, 2016.

Senators sparred with Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay during Question Period in the Red Chamber this week as they sought assurances that the government would take measures to protect the Canadian agricultural industry from the ramifications of proposed free trade deals with Europe and the Transpacific region.

Senator Jaffer Welcomes Youth from Ottawa’s Bangladesh Muslim Community

Senator Mobina Jaffer recognized 23 students from Ottawa’s Bangladesi Muslim community for their accomplishments at school and in the community on Tuesday, June 21, 2016.

The students spent time on Parliament Hill and met with the Speaker of the Senate, the Honorable George Furey, before attending a Senate sitting.

“I want to encourage Canadians to come and enjoy their Parliament,” said Senator Jaffer, who was excited to host the group. “The doors of the Senate of Canada are always open to all Canadians.”
