The Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal People, met at 7:24 p.m., this day, in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Honourable Landon Pearson, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Andreychuk, Johnson, Milne, Pearson and Watt.(6)

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Jill Wherrett.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, April 24, 1997, the committee began its examination of Bill C-39, York Factory First Nation Flooded Land Act; and Bill C-40, Nelson House First Nation Flooded Land Act.

WITNESSES:

From Indian and Northern Affairs Canada:

Ms Sandy Jackson, Manager, Claims, Manitoba;

Dr. C. Kenningham Marchant, Legal Counsel;

Mr. Terry Henderson, Director General, Claims Implementation Branch, Claims and Indian Government.

Mr. Henderson made a statement and with Ms Jackson and Dr. Marchant answered questions.

The Honourable Senator Milne moved -- THAT the committee dispense with clause by clause study of Bills C-39 and C-40.

The question being put on the motion, it was -- Resolved in the affirmative.

The Honourable Senator Milne moved -- THAT Bills C-39 and C-40 be reported back to the Senate without amendment.

The question being put on the motion, it was -- Resolved in the affirmative.

At 7:47 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
