The Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry met at 9:00 a.m. this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Leonard Gustafson, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Landry, Riel and Rossiter. (4)
Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Rivest.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Denis Fréchette and June Dewetering, Research Officers.
Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.
WITNESSES:
From Health Canada:
Dr. George Paterson, Director General, Food Directorate;
Dr. Joost Harwig, Director, Bureau of Microbial Hazards.
Pursuant to its order of reference to study the present state and future of agriculture in Canada, consideration of issues related to the production of raw milk cheese.
Dr. George Paterson from Health Canada made a brief presentation and, with Dr. Joost Harwig, answered questions.
The Honourable Senator Riel moved, - That the budget for the Order of Reference to examine the present state and the future of agriculture in Canada be approved.
The question being put on motion, - it was agreed.
The Honourable Senator Rossiter moved, - That June Dewetering be authorized to attend the Canadian Conference on the Future of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Winnipeg.
The question being put on motion, - it was agreed.
At 10:45 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
