The Standing Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs met this day at 3:21 p.m. in Room 256-S of the Centre Block, the Chairman, the Honourable John B. Stewart, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuck, Carney, De Bané, Grafstein and Stewart. (5)

Members present from the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the House of Commons: Sarkis Assadourian, Eleni Bakopanos, Maud Debien, Michel Dupuy, John English, Bill Graham (Chairman), Mac Harb, Keith Martin, Philippe Paré and Andrew Telegdi.

Also present: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Mr. Anthony Chapman, Economics Division, and Mr. Gerald Schmitz, Political and Social Affairs Division.

In attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

The committee met with His Excellency Mr. Rafik Al-Hariri, Prime Minister of Lebanon and with the following members of his Council of Ministers: Messrs Fouad Sanioura, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; Jean Obeid, Minister of Education, Youth and Sport; Yassine Jaber, Minister of the Economy and Trade; Dr. Assem Salman Jaber, Lebanese Ambassador to Canada and Hisham Shaar, Secretary General of the Council of Ministers.

Lebanese government officials and Canadian parliamentarians discussed bilateral and international issues of interest to both countries.

At 4:20 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
