The Standing Senate Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs, met this day, in Room 505, Victoria Building, at 4:23 p.m., the Chair, the Honourable Senator Sharon Carstairs, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Bryden, Carstairs, Doyle, Gigantès, Lewis, Nolin and Pearson (8).

In attendance: Mollie Dunsmuir, Research Officer, Research Branch of the Library of Parliament.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESS:

Hon. Fernand Roberge, Senator, Sponsor of the bill.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Tuesday, December 10, 1996, the Committee commenced its consideration Bill S-10, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (criminal organization).

The Chair made a statement.

The Hon. Senator Fernand Roberge made an opening statement and answered questions.

The Chair noted an error in the English summary of the Bill -- "not less than one year and" should be deleted to be correct and consistent with the French summary.

Senator Lewis noted a typographical error on page 6 of the Bill -- the paragraph numbered "562.58" should read "462.58."

At 5:17 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
