Morning Meeting

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 9:22 a.m., this day, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Mabel M. DeWare, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: The Honourable Senators Anderson, Bosa, Bonnell, Cohen, Cools, DeWare, Forest, Landry, Lavoie-Roux, Losier-Cool, Murray, Phillips, Rompkey, Roux (14).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves and Kevin Kerr, Research Officers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops:

Most Reverend Marcel Gervais, Archbishop of Ottawa;

Bernard Dufresne, Co-director, Social Affairs Department.

From the Canadian Labour Force Development Board:

Lenore Burton, Executive Director.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, May 30, 1996, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-12, An Act respecting employment insurance in Canada. (See Proceedings of the Committee dated June 3, 1996, Issue No. 4.)

Archbishop Gervais made a statement and, with Mr. Dufresne, answered questions.

Ms Lenore Burton made a statement and answered questions.

At 11:02 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Honourable Senator Simard moved that the brief by the Acadian Union of Affiliated and Fishery Workers/Syndicat Acadien des travailleurs affiliés et des pêches presented by Ms Blanchard be appended to this day's Minutes of Proceedings (See Appendix 5900 S2-C-12, 8 "1").

The question being put on the motion, it was adopted.

Ms Vautour and Mr. Pellerin made statements and answered questions.

At 8:40 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
