The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 3:05 p.m. this day in Room 520, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Mabel M. DeWare, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Bonnell, Bosa, Cohen, Cools, DeWare, Forest, Haidasz, Jessiman, Losier-Cool and Phillips (10).

Other senator present: The Honourable Senator Robertson.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas and Grant Purves, Research Officers.

Also in attendance: The official reporters of the Senate.

WITNESSES:

From the Department of Justice:

Murielle Brazeau, Senior Counsel and Acting Head, Child Support Team;

Wendy Bryans, Counsel, Family, Children and Youth Section;

Marilyn Bongard, Counsel, Family, Children and Youth Section;

Lise Lafrenière-Henrie, Counsel, Family, Children and Youth Section.

Elizabeth Beattie, Individual.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 28, 1996, the committee began consideration of Bill C-41, An Act to amend the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act, the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act and the Canada Shipping Act.

Murielle Brazeau made an opening statement and, together with Lise Lafrenière-Henrie, Wendy Bryans and Marilyn Bongard, answered questions.

At 4:35 p.m., Elizabeth Beattie made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:30 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 11:40 a.m. this day in Room 520, Victoria Building, the Chair, the Honourable Senator Mabel M. DeWare, presiding.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Thursday, November 28, 1996, the committee resumed consideration of Bill C-41, An Act to amend the Divorce Act, the Family Orders and Agreements Enforcement Assistance Act, the Garnishment, Attachment and Pension Diversion Act and the Canada Shipping Act.

Carole Curtis made an opening statement and answered questions.

The Honourable Senator Bosa moved -- THAT the subcommittee of Veterans Affairs comprise as its members the Honourable Senators Bonnell, Cohen, Cools, Perrault and Phillips.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

At 12:45 a.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the chair.
