The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology met at 6:20 p.m. this day in Room 705, Victoria Building, the Chairman, the Honourable Senator Mabel M. DeWare, presiding.

Members of the committee present: The Honourable Senators Andreychuk, Bonnell, Cools, DeWare, Forest, Lavoie-Roux, Maheu and Perrault (8).

Other senators present: The Honourable Senators Cogger and Rossite. (2).

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: June Dewetering, Research Officer.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 16, 1997, the committee began its consideration of Bill C-66, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

Michael McDermott made an opening statement and, together with Krishna Sahay and Johane Tremblay, answered questions.

At 7:10 p.m., Ed H. Guest made an opening statement and, together with Bonnie Dupont and James Carwana, answered questions.

At 8:00 p.m., David Goffin and Claude-André Lachance made opening statements and answered questions.

At 8:40 p.m., Nancy Riche made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 9:00 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.

Pursuant to the Order of Reference adopted by the Senate on Wednesday, April 16, 1997, the committee resumed consideration of Bill C-66, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and the Corporations and Labour Unions Returns Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts. (For complete text of Order of Reference see Proceedings of the Committee dated April 16, 1997, Issue No. 25.)

In the absence of the Chair and Deputy Chair, the clerk entertained motions for appointment of an Acting Chair.

It was moved by the Hon. Senator Maheu that the Hon. Senator Forest serve as Acting Chair.

The question being put on the motion, it was agreed.

Ken Edie made an opening statement and, together with Patty Townsend, answered questions.

At 3:20 p.m., Alan Young made an opening statement and, together with David Dorward and Santo Alborino, answered questions.

At 4:05 p.m., Robert V. Wilds made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:50 p.m., the committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
